Sodium Benzoate
The most widely used food preservative in acidic products. FCC food grade, USP available. Effective against yeasts, molds, and many bacteria at pH below 4.5.
Overview
Sodium benzoate is the sodium salt of benzoic acid — the most widely used preservative in acidic foods and beverages globally. Its effectiveness is pH-dependent: in products with pH below 4.5 (the working range for most carbonated beverages, fruit juices, pickled foods, and acidic sauces), sodium benzoate exists predominantly as the undissociated benzoic acid form, which penetrates microbial cell walls and inhibits yeasts, molds, and many bacteria. Five Rivers Materials supplies food-grade, USP, and technical grades from qualified Chinese producers.
The typical use range is 0.05–0.1% by weight, well below the regulatory maximum of 0.1% (FDA) or 0.15% (Codex). Combined with potassium sorbate or sulfites, sodium benzoate provides broad-spectrum preservation in beverage, sauce, and condiment applications. We supply with FCC certification by default and USP or Kosher/Halal documentation on request.
