PAC (Polyanionic Cellulose)
Polyanionic cellulose drilling-fluid additive. Three viscosity grades for filtrate control and rheology in water-based mud systems.
Overview
Polyanionic cellulose (PAC) is a water-soluble cellulose derivative engineered specifically for oilfield drilling-fluid applications. Created by reacting cellulose with monochloroacetic acid under controlled conditions, PAC is anionic and salt-tolerant — performing in fresh water, seawater, and saturated brine systems alike. Five Rivers Materials supplies all three viscosity grades from qualified producers in China and India.
PAC’s primary function is filtrate control — building a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall that prevents drilling fluid from invading the formation. The three grades (LV, R, HV) trade off filtrate-control efficiency against viscosity contribution, letting drilling fluid engineers select the right grade for each mud system. PAC remains effective in calcium-contaminated muds, high-salinity systems, and at elevated downhole temperatures — making it one of the most widely-used filtrate-control additives in modern drilling operations.
Technical Specifications
Variants & Forms
PAC-LV (Low Viscosity)
Filtrate control without significant viscosity build. Preferred for high-density mud systems where additional viscosity is not desired.
PAC-R (Regular)
Balanced filtrate control and moderate viscosity. The most versatile and commonly used PAC grade.
PAC-HV (High Viscosity)
High viscosity development for hole cleaning in low-solids muds. Preferred for horizontal and extended-reach wells.
